Judge Downey has been practicing civil trial law in Texas for more than 36 years. During that time, his practice, as both an advocate and in alternative dispute resolution, has been in the areas of commercial disputes, mass tort litigation, oil and gas, products liability and intellectual property. He has taught entertainment law, trial advocacy, and sports law at South Texas College of Law as an adjunct professor of law for over 20 years.
A significant portion of Judge Downey’s practice has involved governmental relations, with a broad range of clients in the Texas legislature and diverse state agencies.
He frequently focuses on civil cases involving commercial and business disputes, whether the clients are plaintiffs or defendants. The firm has a long track record of successfully representing individuals, businesses, government agencies and school districts who have been victims of fraud or negligence, such as insurance benefit programs, pension plans or business fraud. Judge Downey also represents automobile dealers in disputes with manufacturers that involve contested hearings before administrative law judges at the Texas Department of Transportation.
Judge Downey is also hired to give expert testimony on the issue of attorney’s fees and breach of fiduciary duty.
Judge Downey is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a distinction enjoyed by only a small percentage of Texas lawyers.
